Flap Disc RFQ Guide

How to Write a Comparable Flap Disc RFQ

Define the disc construction, target material, operating limits, sample test and evidence needed so suppliers quote the same product rather than visually similar alternatives.

01

Lock the disc specification

A product photo is not enough. Record every field that changes cost, safety or grinding behavior.

  • Type 27 or Type 29 profile
  • Diameter, bore and maximum labeled RPM
  • Aluminum oxide, zirconia or ceramic grain
  • Grit, flap count, density and backing plate
02

Define the application

Give suppliers the same workpiece and tool conditions so recommendations and samples are comparable.

  • Carbon steel, stainless or alloy grade
  • Weld blending, edge work or surface finishing
  • Grinder model, guard and operating angle
  • Target cut, finish, heat and change frequency
03

Build the sample acceptance plan

Test identified samples under controlled conditions and retain one approved reference disc.

  • Measure material removed in a fixed time
  • Record disc wear and usable life
  • Check vibration, shedding, glazing and heat
  • Photograph labels and retain sample IDs
04

Complete packaging and commercial inputs

Ask for one written quotation that separates product, packaging, inspection and logistics assumptions.

  • Label artwork, warnings and traceability code
  • Retail pack and master-carton configuration
  • Quantity scenarios and quoted MOQ
  • Incoterm, destination, milestones and inspection

Questions to ask before issuing the order

Require answers tied to the exact SKU, document number and order responsibility, not a generic website claim.

  1. 1.Which legal entity and facility make the quoted SKU?
  2. 2.Which test report covers this diameter, construction and maximum RPM?
  3. 3.Will any grain, backing plate, adhesive or flap source change after sample approval?
  4. 4.How are sample approval, production inspection and nonconforming lots documented?

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Type 27 and Type 29 flap discs?

Type 27 has a flat profile and suits blending and finishing at a shallow working angle, while Type 29 has a conical profile that presents the flaps at an angle for faster stock removal. The RFQ should state the profile explicitly because the two constructions grind differently even at the same diameter and grit.

Which abrasive grain should I specify in the RFQ?

Aluminum oxide covers general carbon-steel work at the lowest cost, zirconia gives longer life under heavier pressure, and ceramic suits stainless steel and heat-sensitive applications. The final choice should be confirmed by a sample test on the actual workpiece rather than by grain name alone.

How can two flap disc quotations be compared fairly?

Compare only quotes built on the same diameter, bore, profile, grain, grit, flap count and density, backing plate, maximum RPM and pack-out. A lower unit price often hides fewer flaps, a lighter backing or a lower rated speed, so price per disc should be checked against measured service life in the sample test.

Does SCOTTCHEN publish a fixed MOQ for flap discs?

No single number is quoted on the website as a commitment. MOQ depends on the disc construction, size, grain and private-label packaging scope and is confirmed in the dated written quotation for each SKU.
